COMPOSITION XXII - ANDREW ANANDA VOOGEL (US/KR) JUNE 2021

My relation to material originates from an interest in archives of displacement, exile and forced migrations, which began when I started researching my own family’s archive of forced labor and displacement during the British Colonial rule of India. Oftentimes, I’m drawn to materials first, form second. I tend to collect materials along my own journey into spaces and places of rapid disappearance. Material forms that are involved in their own unbecoming, that are already imbued with a sense of time, withering at the seams, gently being destroyed by the elements. Only present for the patient witness. As I collect materials, memories and photographs of journeys into various archives and geographies, I continue to work with the collected materials and memories over a period of years until a final form finds definition.
