DANI REYNOLDS (SA)
Trade-Off

The basis of Trade-off is a suite of sculptures formed with a donated and left behind collection of trophies from a childhood tennis champion. The sculptures are a tender and playful exploration embracing deconstruction, modification and remixing signifiers as an act of personal liberation.

In this iteration of the work Reynolds’ has engaged the trophy donor (Thomas McCammon) and his mum (Darrel West) in intimate collaboration to form painting, writing and sound work to accompany the sculptures.

Over the course of a year, Reynolds and West intermittently met to spend time painting together. These sessions were filled with discussion, experimentation, and plenty of complexity, as they navigated the ins and outs of collaboration; combining their distinctly different styles and processes in an attempt to form something meaningful.

“You win Dani,” West once said during one of their sessions, after Reynolds insisted on using a specific colour preference over hers.

Trade-off draws on each of the collaborators different positionalities and considers themes of success and failure, what it means to win, at what cost, and to whom.
