Unclean examines the parallels between the repetitive nature of analog photography and the act of hand-washing garments. In this work, the photographic process directly mimics acts of washing and laundry. Guided strictly by the teachings from the 1953 publication, ‘Laundrywork in School’ each photographic print is made by substituting laundry chemicals for traditional and experimental photographic chemistry, and treating the light-sensitive photographic paper as if it were an item of clothing. The intent of this process is to care for the paper in the same way that you would care for an item of beloved clothing. To wash is to nurture.

This work encompasses the duality of discipline and intuition. The nature of the process means that some of the prints may change over time, acknowledging the ‘objectness’ of the photograph and exploring its characteristics outside of photography. Many of these works are created on the periphery of everyday happenings in an attempt to capture the architecture of studio space. Durational cameraless photography has the ability to collapse light into a single fixed image. These works are about time, they are light sensitive and most remain unfixed.
