Keep Running brings together work from nine artist-run initiatives across Australia to explore the importance of community, collaboration and collective support in national artist-run culture.
Following on from Run Artist Run, Paper Mountain’s 2014 comprehensive survey of Perth ARIs, this exhibition sees the ARI itself as an engine of sustainable creative practice, with artists, art workers and audiences playing active parts in artistic production.
ARIs are essential to Australia’s visual arts infrastructure. Their unique, community-based structures give artists the support and flexibility they need in order to bridge the gap between study and professional practice.
Each ARI is bonded and driven by a specific ideology, whether fully named or unnamed, that they use as their swords and shields as they battle their way through red tape, financial headaches, and leaky ceilings.
Keep Running is a tribute to these battles. The exhibition features ARI directors contributing existing works from their individual practices, directors collaborating on new work, artist books and performances. An unofficial sub-theme of the exhibition is ARI directors taking a break from administering their spaces and getting back to art, a timely reminder of the sacrifices made by people who serve their communities by running ARIs.
