Deep Space is a moving-image work based on footage from NASA and the International Space Station. Using common and mundane objects to recreate extraterrestrial views, Fuller seeks to position the viewer in a state of uncertainty. This confusion about whether the footage is of something vast or something tiny (or both) gestures to our relationship with deep space – it is something we can simultaneously know a great deal yet also nothing about.

We are different when we are troubled. We see differently. We are pulled down, defeated, to lie flat like water across the lowest plain. All else washes over us and we lose track of days and time. In this submerged state, we can lay unmoving and undisturbed, wholly present to the little unrealised wonders of our surroundings.

It is peculiar the way that mundane and familiar sights can change in the way that we see them. Suddenly every surface is a landscape. Tiny movements are captivating. Stillness is unnerving. Small things become monoliths and empty spaces become vast expanses of tense air.

The work in this exhibition represents a changed perception of one's surroundings as influenced by emotional burden. The intensity of such a state of mind resonates in the complete stillness that photography allows. As viewers of a photograph, we are placed as passive witnesses. We cannot intervene with the sight before us, and are invited to also become submerged and to see differently.

Steph Fuller is an emerging artist and photographer based in Adelaide. Underpinning her practice is a desire to bring the familiar into a new light. Fuller is currently completing her masters by course work in visual arts at the University of South Australia.
