FRONT GALLERY: JONATHAN KIM (SA) - DENSITY

The reconstructed structures made of found materials in Jonathan Kim’s work presents various spatial concepts named as Gong-Gan-Seong (spatiality). This idea was inspired by Lee Ufan’s philosophy of Man-Nam (Encounter) that was contemporaneous with the Post-minimalist art movement of the 1970s. The relationship between a thing and its surroundings is more important than its physical work in Kim’s practice. However, the meaning of Kim’s spatiality is expanding and evolving by embracing other post-minimal concepts.

Density is a fundamental concept of spatiality in Jonathan Kim’s research based on Phenomenology. It means not only the physical properties of the material, but also different spatial tension formed by them. Also, Kim ethnic sentiment reflected is creating another density difference with the space of Feltspace. Density difference is often mistaken for opposing or conflict, but it is a starting point to balance on Kim’s practice. In this exhibition, audiences will be able to create a different phase of this work by becoming an element of Kim’s work with their densities.
