Viscera

'Entangled, we dangle, caught in our web.’

Secrets lie in wait within a place closer than any other. Before arriving make sure to know that which is already here. The space is not so divided from its subject, it is us all along. Yet somehow the mystery resides despite that subtle startled awareness. Feeling rhythm in the beat, a breath deep, let wander…

How should we begin this journey of ours? Daring along the unravelling path, spilling guts and leaving entrails. Dwelling within the tangles of viscera. Sweet and warm, blood and bone. The colour turning artificially fluorescent. Cold and alienating from within. Entangled, we dangle, caught in our web. The more we wrestle the tighter the squeeze.

When asked whatever will the art be my response is… everything and all of it. Truthfully and broadly the art is you and the gallery itself. You and your experience, the space both empty and full is my material. We are collaborators. Your emotional response, active awareness, consciousness of being a body enveloped by conceptual and technical data, tangible and intangible, architecturally and sculpturally is my aim.

We are agents of change, autonomous corporeal beings filled with intertwining complexities and contradictions. Turn it inside out, feel and think freely.

Artist Bio

Antoni Phillips is an emerging contemporary sculptor and installation artist predominantly working with steel and physical space. He makes modular, large-scale and immersive work designed to directly engage his audience through the interplay of material with space and bodies that occupy it. He is interested in contrast and creating works through an intuitive process developed with the aid of research and planning. Phillips graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts) at Flinders University in 2023. He was the recipient of the FELTspace Graduate Award (2023), exhibiting his debut solo show ‘Viscera’ the following year at FELTspace Art Gallery as a direct outcome. In 2024, he is pursuing an Honours Degree in Visual Arts from Flinders University.
