SINE QUA NON (WITHOUT WHICH, NOT)

Things are slippery now. The world seems precarious.

Interrogating this discomfort, artists Aleda Laszczuk and Morgan Brazill Barry have gone to play. Transgressing shape and meaning, shifting and intersecting found and created objects. This exhibition is a collection of interactions, an attempt at connection through the increasing intolerance, disassociation and alienation.

While the relationships created between these ‘things’ are supposed to be uneasy, ‘Sine Qua Non’ proposes a shift towards more aberrant subject-object relationships. Blurring metaphorical lines between spectator/actor, exploiter/exploited, looker/observed… the parochial illusion of dualism.

Are you really separate from the ideas you’re thinking when you are looking?

Does the object exist without your perception of it?

 Can art exist without meaning?

If the object’s purpose is to have meaning and the meaning is contingent upon the looker’s observation of it, then perhaps the art cannot exist without your impression of it? But does that make you a part of the art itself?

There are many ways of perceiving. You decide.
