King-single / Expanded Queen explores the way social forces operate within domestic space, predominantly focusing on the bedroom and how it might shape and inform emergent queer identities. For many people, the bedroom offers a shelter through which to actively reimagine and challenge normative social ideals. However, simultaneously it is fixed within restrictive binaries of public and private, freedom and repression. Using recorded performance and installation this body of work attempts to unpack these ambivalent, frustrated tensions within the home; considering how individuals might move through its affects and question heteronormative standards.

Liam Colgan is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator based in Perth. Colgan’s work broadly investigates the fields of sexuality and queer theory in relation to art practice. They are interested in the latent social structures within everyday life that inform an individual’s identity. Their investigations predominantly take the form of video, performance, and installation. Through these media, Colgan considers how art might allow individuals to challenge social power structures and navigate the complexities of identity.
